Perfect Your Prose – Thurs 18th September

Line editing like a boss

Ever received feedback suggesting your prose could be “tighter” or have a little more flair? Or perhaps you’re interested in polishing up your work, but don’t know where to start.

This is the webinar for you.

Over two hours I’ll give you tools for your writer’s kit to make sentences sing!

What are my qualifications?

I’ve had my short stories published in PodCastle, Strange Horizons, ParSec and other SFF magazines. I’ve been reprinted in two “Best of” yearly anthologies. My short story collection won a British Fantasy Award in 2023 and have a novella out this year.

I’ve also edited two anthologies and been a slush reader for the British Fantasy Society’s Horizons magazine. I’ve got a lot of relevant experience that I can pass on to you!

In this session, we’ll be talking about an important self-editing toolkit to help you tighten up and polish your prose on a sentence to sentence level. We’ll be looking beyond the usual platitudes of self-help books (“just delete all your adverbs!”, “show don’t tell!” etc) to what might work for the piece you are writing.

Instead of being prescriptive, I’ll give you adaptive tools to use as you please. These techniques can be used on short stories, or long!

With your newfound knowledge, you can hope to get your work in front of magazine head editors and prevent slush pile premature drop-out! I can’t make your stories get selected, but can help you get more consistent attention and praise.

Writing a novel? These techniques are great to help your prose get punchy and pacy. Using the tools I give you, your beta readers will inhale your words and proofreaders will say, “I wish all my clients could write like this!”
